Agenda/Blog
Dear Parents/Guardians of Room 8,
Thank you for checking the blog. This week is a short week. There is a PD Day on Friday, May 18th, and therefore is a non-student day. Victoria Day Holiday is on Monday, May 21st, and the school will be closed. We will be doing our spelling test on Thursday this week. Here are the words:
We will be doing some writing for our assembly this week, finishing up our poetry unit, and engaging in EXTREME WRITING! Extreme writing targets increasing writing output. Students have 5 minutes to write as much as they can as fast as they can. They count and graph the number of words they write. We will review conventions after our extreme writing unit. In math, we are learning how to sort 2D shapes and 3D objects using characteristics this week. In science, we will be learning about animals and insects in a food chain. Grade 2s continue to learn about Iqaluit. Grade 1s are demonstrating their knowledge of places and people in the community through using a coding language called Scratch. In the comments below, name a 2D shape or 3D object! Reminders:

Hello Grade 1s and 2s!
Please leave a comment below stating how animals (grade 1) and insects (grade 2) survive in the desert! Here are some links to help you: https://www.desertusa.com/animals.html http://www.in-the-desert.com/insects.html See you tomorrow! ~Miss Murphy Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope everyone is enjoying our beautiful weather! It is so nice to see active living through bike riding and walking to school at this time of year! This week for our spelling test we will be reviewing long vowel words. This will therefore be the last week on long vowel words, so please make sure you really practice to ensure that we are all masters moving into our next grade! Skipping Club starts tomorrow! For those that have already returned forms, please meet at our entrance doors (not the main doors) at 8:00am. Doors will no longer be open at 8:10, as I will then be at the skipping club! Please be on time. We will be having a presentation from a Physical Therapist on Friday! She will be leading our group through developing various gross motor coordination skills! Spring Clean Up will also be on Friday. We will be collaborating with our buddy class (Ms. Lunnin, Room 2) to help clean up an area of the field, now that all the snow has melted. Finally, we will be taking home our Mother's Day crafts on Friday! We have also begun preparing for our Assembly on May 31st. If you would like, feel free to practice the song at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypVQDZL18SQ We are also collaboratively writing a fictional math story! So fun! Take a look at what we have so far: Problem: Rectangular prism gets squished into a rectangle. All the shapes try to help but they get squished flat too! Characters: Riley the Rectangular prism (MC), Connie the Cone, Sam the Sphere, Sawyer the Cylinder, Pete the Pyramid, Conner the Cube Setting: On a road Homework: Think about a possible solution! Leave a comment below stating one type of measurement that we have been learning about in class. Hello!
We are very busy in Room 8! I apologize, I was having some technical difficulties but now have full access to Weebly again. Swimming continues this week! Please remember that it goes all the way to the end of the week, including Friday! It has been so fun, and everything has been going very smoothly! Everyone has been swimming hard and learning lots. Unfortunately I cannot take pictures this year due to the rules of the pool, but parents are more than welcome to come observe from the Observation Deck! Spelling test Friday Skipping Club begins next Wednesday! If you haven't returned your form yet, please do so ASAP. What's happening in Room 8?! In Language Arts, we have been reviewing writing conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling). Students have been applying this learning to opinion writing. We've started to learn about this kind of writing through "Would you rather...?" writing. Yesterday the students wrote in response to: Would you rather eat a bug or get stung by a bee? Yikes...neither sounds good to me! If you had to choose, what would you rather? We have also been learning about giving REASONS to justify our opinion! We practiced reasons through a classroom debate, and many of the students were very passionate about their justifications! So fun. In math, we have been finishing up our Addition/Subtraction Unit Test (yes, tests do take this long in Grade 1/2). We finally finished it today, so expect it to be coming home marked soon :) We have moved on to learning about measurement. Students used non-standard units of measurement (i.e. blocks, paper clips, etc.) to measure themselves and their environment and make comparisons of length. We have moved onto weight through comparing using a pan-scale. In the comments below, complete the sentence: __________ is heavier than _________ OR _________ is lighter than ____________. In science, the students have been working with the app "Explain Everything" (yes, I'm sure some of you will have your children asking to download it this week...it's a great app) to pull on pictures of animals (grade 1) and insects (grade 2), sort the animals/insects into groups, and record explaining how they sorted the animals/insects. We have also been growing plants in the classroom! We have been so excited to learn that when plants have their five needs met (ask your child what the five needs are) that the plants start to grow! The children are thrilled to walk in and see their plants growth every morning. Dear Parents of Room 8,
Students who are interested in joining skipping club at Woodlands School received a letter in their agenda today. Please return the bottom part of the form by Friday, April 27, 2018. Skipping club will be May 9, 16, 23, and 30th at 8:00am. Spelling:
Students will have an addition and subtraction quiz this week. It may be beneficial for students to practice the following skills at home:
Main focus of concepts we are currently learning about:
Leave a comment below describing how to solved the problem: 30 - 2 - 8 = ? Dear Parents/Guardians,
I have updated your child's reading level (if necessary) on RazKids. Please be sure that your child is logging on to listen to reading, read, and answer comprehension questions often! It is a great resource. Additionally, please note that the RazKids levels are NOT the same as our reading level assessments used within the school. As the levels get higher in RazKids, they do NOT necessarily correspond. For example, a reading assessment level of O corresponds to level S on RazKids. Please feel free to contact me should you require further clarification. P.S. Check out the Gallery for updated pictures of our jersey day and the Grade 1 field trip to Heritage Park! Thanks, Miss Murphy Spelling:
PD Day Friday - no school for students. Volunteer/Community Tea April 27 - please RSVP. How to Build a Snowman book was due yesterday. Please hand in ASAP. Spelling - Long A Words
Wear a jersey or green/gold on Friday for the Humboldt Broncos. Swim form and payment due tomorrow. Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back to school! It was very nice to meet with everyone at our Student-Led Conferences, and I hope everyone had an enjoyable Spring Break. We certainly will have a busy remainder of our school year! First, the Grade 1s received their Heritage Park field trip forms yesterday. Please return the form and payment ASAP, as the trip is already on Tuesday! Additionally, if you are able to volunteer, please fill out the slip indicating so. On this day, there will be a substitute in the classroom to teach the Grade 2s. It will be a small class so I'm sure that there will be lots of work done that day for my Grade 2 students! The Grade 2s will be going on a field trip to the Calgary Tower at the end of May. The field trip form for this will come home at a later date. Next, the students received their Swimming Forms for our swimming program at the beginning of May. We do require volunteers, and specifically at least one male volunteer. Please return the slip indicating if you are available. Payment for the Swimming Program is due next Thursday. Spelling test Friday:
Inline Skating is tonight at 5:30-7:30pm. The cost for each participant is $3. Have fun! Things we are learning about in class:
Dear Parents/Guardians, I am really looking forward to having the chance to formally meet with you all on Thursday evening and Friday this week! If you have not done so already, please book an appointment through My CBE Account. This round of interviews are going to be Student Led! The students are very excited to share their learning and progress with you. While the students share, I will also be sure to interject in order to give you formalized updates as to how your child is progressing. I have included the Student-Led Checklist for your reference as to what to expect. Please do not print this off, I will have lots of copies upon your arrival. Please note that the first four items will be completed during your scheduled 15 minute time. The remaining items can be completed before or after your 15 minute time. I strongly encourage you to plan to arrive 10 minutes early or stay 10 minutes late in order to allow your child to showcase the remainder of their learning. The students are really excited to have the chance to "lead" this interview. Additionally, please make sure that you take your child's boat/car/buildings home with you at your interview. Thanks! Please feel free to send me an email if you have any further questions. Looking forward to seeing everyone there! Other notes:
