Agenda/Blog
Hello!
We are very busy in Room 8! I apologize, I was having some technical difficulties but now have full access to Weebly again. Swimming continues this week! Please remember that it goes all the way to the end of the week, including Friday! It has been so fun, and everything has been going very smoothly! Everyone has been swimming hard and learning lots. Unfortunately I cannot take pictures this year due to the rules of the pool, but parents are more than welcome to come observe from the Observation Deck! Spelling test Friday Skipping Club begins next Wednesday! If you haven't returned your form yet, please do so ASAP. What's happening in Room 8?! In Language Arts, we have been reviewing writing conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling). Students have been applying this learning to opinion writing. We've started to learn about this kind of writing through "Would you rather...?" writing. Yesterday the students wrote in response to: Would you rather eat a bug or get stung by a bee? Yikes...neither sounds good to me! If you had to choose, what would you rather? We have also been learning about giving REASONS to justify our opinion! We practiced reasons through a classroom debate, and many of the students were very passionate about their justifications! So fun. In math, we have been finishing up our Addition/Subtraction Unit Test (yes, tests do take this long in Grade 1/2). We finally finished it today, so expect it to be coming home marked soon :) We have moved on to learning about measurement. Students used non-standard units of measurement (i.e. blocks, paper clips, etc.) to measure themselves and their environment and make comparisons of length. We have moved onto weight through comparing using a pan-scale. In the comments below, complete the sentence: __________ is heavier than _________ OR _________ is lighter than ____________. In science, the students have been working with the app "Explain Everything" (yes, I'm sure some of you will have your children asking to download it this week...it's a great app) to pull on pictures of animals (grade 1) and insects (grade 2), sort the animals/insects into groups, and record explaining how they sorted the animals/insects. We have also been growing plants in the classroom! We have been so excited to learn that when plants have their five needs met (ask your child what the five needs are) that the plants start to grow! The children are thrilled to walk in and see their plants growth every morning.

I'm heavier than a piece of paper. A fly is lighter than an apartment building.
