Grade 1 specific learner outcome: Sort objects, using one attribute, and explain the sorting rule.
Grade 2 specific learner outcome: Sort a set of objects, using two attributes, and explain the sorting rule. How could you sort the buttons in this picture? If you are in Grade 1, sort using one attribute. If you are in Grade 2, sort using two attributes. Grade 1 example: I could sort the buttons into different groups based on colour! All of the blue ones could go in one group, all of the red ones in another group, etc. Grade 2 example: I could sort them into buttons that are blue, buttons with two holes, and blue buttons with two holes! (Try to encourage to students to describe a rule with an overlapping feature).

I would sort the buttons based on number of holes in the button. So 2 holes only go in one pile and 4 holes would go in another. Then I would sort the 2 hole buttons by colour.

I would sort the buttons by colour. Then I would sort all of the buttons in each colour by the number of holes they have.
