GRADE 1
Building Things In Room 8, we are beginning our next unit in science, Building Things. We will be exploring a variety of materials to design and build objects. This will include model buildings, furniture, vehicles, etc. In order to have a variety of experiences in this area, we require some building materials from home. This may include materials such as thin cardboard, paper towel rolls, popsicle sticks, plastic, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, straw, tin foil, string, etc. We find that thicker cardboard is challenging to cut, so we specifically request thinner cardboard from cereal boxes, pop boxes, etc. Additionally, for hygienic reasons, we ask that you please do not send toilet paper rolls. If you have any of these materials at home that you could donate to our classroom, it would be greatly appreciated. Materials can be sent to school as soon as Wednesday, January 17th and we ask that all materials be sent in by Monday, January 22nd. Thank you very much for your support as we begin exploring our new unit! Miss Murphy ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ GRADE 2 At-Home Science Challenge Your challenge is to design an insulated container at home that will keep an ice cube frozen for as long as possible. You will need to use a plastic container with a LID to hold your ice cube in. You may insulate your plastic container with different materials such as tin foil, wax paper, leather, cotton, Styrofoam, fabric, newspaper, plasticine, bubble wrap, or anything else you can think of. Attach your insulating materials to the inside and/or outside of the plastic container. On Tuesday, January 23rd, please bring your design to school. The students will have the opportunity to share their creations and later we will test them out. We will give the ice cube at school and then we will see the results. Which design will keep the ice cube frozen the longest? Good luck and have fun! Miss Murphy
